Here, Sandra relies on her knowledge and skill as a children’s author to introduce new ideas for using nonfiction books in the classroom. Selections from well-known children’s book awards as well as inspiring yet lesser-known awards will be shared and discussed. Additionally, ways to use multi-genre informational works, including her photo-informational book, Tales from the Top of the World, will be highlighted.

Participants will:

• Explore works of nonfiction selected for acclaim by the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Awards, Outstanding Science Trade Books, Jane Addams Children’s Books and more.
• Participate in “think like an author activities” to identify unique features of informational texts that will ignite students’ passions.
• Discover new ways to connect informational works to their curriculum.
